DETROIT, MICHIGAN: Former president Donald Trump recently offered rare positive remarks about his one-time political adversary, Barack Obama.

These unexpected comments came ahead of Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.

During a recent interview, Trump was asked about his thoughts on the 44th president, a figure with whom he has had a contentious relationship over the years, as per Daily Mail.

While Donald Trump did not shy away from criticizing Barack Obama’s policies, particularly on trade, he also took a moment to commend the former president’s character.

"I like him, I think he's a nice gentleman," Trump stated. However, he quickly pivoted to his usual critical stance, adding, "but he was very, very weak on trade. If you take a look at what happened to our country trade-wise, it was a disaster."

Trump specifically pointed to Obama’s dealings with countries like China and Japan as significant flaws in his presidency.

Yet, amid his critique, Trump found room for praise, not just for Obama but also for his wife, Michelle Obama. "I happen to like him. I respect him, and I respect his wife," Trump told CNN, highlighting a softer tone.

This isn’t the first time Trump has offered a mix of criticism and respect towards Obama.

Despite his strong critiques during the 2016 election campaign, Trump has previously expressed admiration for Obama, particularly in a 2021 interview with Bill O’Reilly.

According to The Sun Sentinel, Trump remarked, "I liked him", even though the crowd reacted negatively to the mention of Obama’s name. Trump further acknowledged Obama’s intelligence, describing him as "smart and sharp".

Trump’s latest comments are particularly noteworthy given his long history of feuding with Obama.

Long before Trump entered the political arena, he was one of the most vocal proponents of the "birther" conspiracy, a baseless claim that Obama was not born in the United States and therefore ineligible to serve as president.

This conspiracy theory was widely discredited, but it played a significant role in Trump’s rise to political prominence.

As a politician, Trump’s attacks on Obama only intensified. He went as far as to label Obama as the "founder of ISIS", and in another instance, he called Obama "one of the worst presidents in the history of the United States".

Donald Trump attracts trolling online in wake of praise for Barack Obama

Donald Trump’s unexpected praise for Barack Obama did not go unnoticed by the public, with social media users mocking Trump.

One YouTube user commented, "This is so laughable coming from Trump. No one believes him."

Another remarked, "He says he respects them today, tomorrow he'll say they're terrible. You can't take anything he says seriously."

"Trump does NOT know what the word respect means," wrote a third user, while another added, "Give it 5 minutes before he says how much he hates them again."

"He’s realized that he’s on track to lose this election & he’s TERRIFIED," speculated one user.

Another user took a more critical tone, writing, "If Trump's life depended on telling the truth, he would be through within 45 seconds."

One user pointed out, "His team have told him to cut the insults... so he's lying."

Another user highlighted, stating, "That is a patently ridiculous proclamation from the felon who promoted birtherism for years!"
