ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Former President Donald Trump has appealed a judge's ruling allowing Fulton County DA Fani Willis to continue in the Georgia election subversion case, reported the New York Post.

The ex-president, along with eight of his co-defendants, requested the appeals court to overturn the verdict on Friday, March 29, in response to Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee's decision earlier this month, allowing Willis to remain on the case following lead investigator Nathan Wade's resignation from his post.

The DA and the special prosecutor's romantic relationship sparked fury among the defendants, who demanded to remove Willis from the election subversion case.

The latest request is part of Trump and his co-defendant's attempt to either dismiss all the charges against them before the trial begins or disqualify Willis due to a conflict of interest and misusing public funds.

Trump was indicted in August 2023 for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, which President Joe Biden won. However, the GOP presumptive nominee has denied all wrongdoings.

Fani Willis hopeful proceedings start before election

Trump's latest move might cause further delays to the trial, which was initially set to start in August. Nevertheless, Willis seemed hopeful that the trial would begin before the 2024 presidential election on November 5 in a recent conversation with CNN.

"I'm also realistic that one of the defendants has multiple cases going on and some of them have trial dates that are ahead of ours. So, I'm always going to be respectful of sister jurisdictions," she said.

On Friday, Trump attorney Steve Sadow said in a statement, "Defendants argued in the trial court that the indictment should have been dismissed and, at a minimum, DA Willis and her office should have been disqualified from prosecuting the case."

"The Georgia Court of Appeals should grant the application and accept the interlocutory appeal for consideration on the merits," he added.

Georgia's Appeals Court must still decide if it would take the case before the trial starts, which should be done within 45 days.

The 2024 presidential election entered a general election race in mid-March after Trump and Biden crossed the needed delegate threshold to clinch the respective party nominations formally.

Internet mocks Donald Trump

The former president faced intense mockery online for seeking to remove DA Willis from the Georgia election subversion case.

One user wrote, "Running scared If he was innocent he wouldn’t try to get rid of Fani RUN trump RUN!"

"Is he gonna appeal the room, the bailiff, the paintings on the wall? He’s so pathetic," another user remarked.

A third user added, "Trump appeals everything he loses until he can't, we learned from his election loss that he doesn't take losing well."

"Lose and delay. Lose and delay, then complain. Over and over and over. Trump is the biggest loser on the planet," a fourth response read.

Someone else said, "Looks like Trump and his crew are really fighting to avoid facing the music in Georgia. Bet they're hoping for a Hail Mary pass on this one!"

"Oh...an attempt at delay? How freaking original of him," an individual opined.

"How about only three appeals per person per case in one year," a user said, referring to Trump's multiple appeals.

Another user said, "It’s amazing how he appeals everything when he is spending his sucker supporter’s money."
