LANSING, MICHIGAN: Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) dismissed any rumors suggesting that she is secretly positioning herself to be Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate.

The 52-year-old influential Democrat, who endorsed Harris for the November ticket and announced that she would continue as co-chair of the newly renamed Harris for President campaign, clarified that she plans to remain in Michigan, according to the New York Post.

What did Gov Gretchen Whitmer say about being Kamala Harris’ vice-presidential pick?

“No, I’m not planning to go anywhere,” Whitmer informed a WLNS reporter on Monday regarding whether she would consider a hypothetical offer to be vice president, claiming that she is “not leaving Michigan.”

“I am proud to be the governor of Michigan. I have been consistent,” the Democratic governor said. “I know everyone is always suspicious and asking this question over and over again. I am not going anywhere.”

Whitmer also explained that she delayed endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris because she was “surprised” by President Joe Biden's abrupt departure from the presidential race and needed time to gather her thoughts.

“I wanted a minute to check in with all my colleagues and let the dust settle,” she remarked.

Gov Gretchen Whitmer has been frequently mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate, given her role as a crucial battleground state governor.

Despite ongoing speculation, she has repeatedly dismissed the idea of seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.

After President Biden withdrew from the 2024 race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, most top Democrats promptly followed suit and expressed their support for her.

Gov Whitmer expressed her enthusiastic endorsement of Kamala Harris for President of the United States in a statement, saying, “I am fired up to endorse Kamala Harris for President of the United States.”

“In Vice President Harris, Michigan voters have a presidential candidate they can count on to focus on lowering their costs, restoring their freedoms, bringing jobs and supply chains back home from overseas, and building an economy that works for working people,” she asserted.

Should she win the Democratic presidential nomination, Kamala Harris faces a tight deadline to choose her running mate.

The Democratic National Convention is less than a month away, scheduled for August 19-22.

In addition, deadlines for ballot submissions in different states are quickly approaching.

Initially, Democrats planned to virtually nominate their presidential candidate with an early vote before the convention. However, the party's rules committee will convene on Wednesday to discuss the next steps.

Several prominent Democrats considered potential running mates for Harris have not ruled out the possibility.

“Look, if they if they do the polling and it turns out that they need a 49-year-old, bald and gay Jew from Boulder, Colorado, they got my number,” joked Colorado Governor Jared Polis (D) on CNN on Monday.

One X user wrote, "A Harris-Whitmer ticket would be awesome!"

Another user argued, "Smart. Whitmer sees Dead Woman Walking. She doesn’t want to be VP on that sinking ship. The Dem who runs & (likely) loses will be out in ‘28. They’re happy it’s Harris. They get rid of a world-class bad candidate w/o PO’ing black voters calling ‘racism!’: ‘She’s out for cause.’"

Finally, this user tweeted, "She had to check in with her colleagues before knowing if she was endorsing Kamala. When are voters going to wake up and realize they have been totally used and manipulated by the democrat party for years?"
