DAYTON, OHIO: Former President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by lashing out at the Cleveland Guardians' decision to change their team name from the Indians, as per Daily Mail.

During a fiery campaign rally in Dayton, Ohio, the 2024 Republican presidential candidate unleashed a scathing critique of the Dolan family, which owns the baseball franchise, accusing them of abandoning tradition and caving to pressure from a "vocal minority."

Trump's comments have reignited the heated debate surrounding the name change, which was implemented in 2021 after years of backlash over the perceived offensive and racist nature of the team's previous moniker.

"I like sports and I like tradition. So you have a team called the Cleveland Indians. Indians. They're Indians. And they took the team Cleveland Indians and made it to the Cleveland Guardians. Almost like they're in charge of a trust fund," Trump exclaimed, his disbelief palpable.

Trump's criticism extended to Matt Dolan, an Ohio state senator who owns a partial stake in the Guardians and previously ran for the US Senate as a Republican candidate.

"My attitude is anybody that changes the name of the Cleveland Indians to the Cleveland Guardians should not be a senator. Should not be a governor," Trump declared, adding, "I don't know Matt Dolan, but just know that he's the guy that I guess owns the team in some form and he was in charge of changing the name."

Cleveland baseball franchise underwent name change in 2021 amidst growing backlash

The Cleveland baseball franchise, formerly known as the Indians for over a century (1915-2021), underwent a name change in 2021, amidst growing backlash from fans and activists who deemed the previous name offensive and racist.

Team owner Larry Dolan, and his son Paul, the team's CEO and chairman, pointed to a nationwide reevaluation of racially insensitive names and symbols as the driving force behind the decision to rebrand.

After a year-long process involving fan surveys and community input, the team settled on the name 'Guardians,' inspired by the iconic 'Guardians of Traffic' statues on the Hope Memorial Bridge near the ballpark.

However, the transition was not without its legal challenges. A local roller derby team called the Cleveland Guardians initiated a legal dispute citing trademark violations. Nevertheless, the parties involved eventually reached a mutually agreeable resolution, permitting both teams to utilize the name.
