Internet abuzz as Barack Obama again steps in to bag votes and funds for Biden campaign's final stages
WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Barack Obama is once more intervening to help lock up votes and funds during the final stages of Joe Biden's presidential campaign after reportedly having abandoned the worries that made Obama leery of the 81-year-old's 2020 campaign.
Obama's popularity and standing among Democratic donors have been a financial and PR boost for Biden ahead of his rematch with former President Donald Trump, which takes place at a time when Biden is coming under growing scrutiny for his policies, record, and mental faculties.
Barack Obama says he takes great pride in Biden administration's accomplishments
"I take great pride in what the Biden administration has accomplished," Obama said during a recent event with Biden and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
"It’s a reminder that we don’t have to just vote against something in this election. We have somebody to worry about. And there’s a whole agenda that we should be concerned about," Obama added.
"But we can take pride in affirming the extraordinary work that Joe has done. And we want to make sure that we build on that and then pass it on to the next president rather than have a president who wants to reverse the progress that has been made," he continued.
Barack Obama’s comments were part of a lavish fundraising event for the Democrats
Obama made these remarks during a lavish fundraising event that raised a staggering $30 million for the Biden campaign, reported Fox News.
Hollywood celebrities, including Julia Roberts and George Clooney, graced the stage to show support for the 46th president. The total amount of money raised broke earlier Democratic fundraising records.
Biden is preparing for a challenging rematch with Trump this year with polls placing the former ahead of Trump by two points, which is well within the margin of error.
After Biden declared in April last year that he would "finish the job" and seek reelection, several high-profile fundraising events featuring Hollywood celebrities, elites from the top echelons of American society and business, and most significantly, Obama, quickly followed.
Barack Obama was present at Joe Biden's March fundraiser event as well
This was not the first time Obama's attendance in Los Angeles helped bring in millions for Biden.
In March, the 44th president and former President Bill Clinton joined Biden at Radio City Music Hall in New York for another star-studded fundraiser, which was this time emceed by actress Mindy Kaling.
Late-night host Stephen Colbert led a discussion with Biden, Obama, and Clinton during the event as special guests Queen Latifah, Lizzo, and Ben Platt also made appearances.
At the time, the campaign claimed that the event had raised over $26 million in revenue.
Barack Obama recorded campaign videos with Joe Biden this election cycle
According to several media reports, Obama and Biden have also recorded campaign videos for this election cycle and spoken about how the campaign will be structured in 2024.
Obama's efforts to raise money this year are similar to those he took when he intervened to support Biden in 2020.
Among them was an $11 million fundraiser, which was the first time the two had done so since the Obama administration. In the final days before Election Day, Obama continued to stump for Biden and even released a harsh critique of Trump.
"Trump cares about feeding his ego. Joe cares about keeping you and your family safe," Obama said in Flint, Michigan, just days before the 2020 election.
Obama added, "[Trump is] still worried about his inauguration crowd being smaller than mine. It really bugs him. He’s still talking about that. Does he have nothing better to worry about? Did no one come to his birthday party as a kid? Was he traumatized?"
Barack Obama previously cautioned Joe Biden against seeking the White House
However, Obama advised Biden against running for president long before he joined him on the campaign trail or even endorsed his former running mate, citing concerns that the race could "damage his legacy."
"You don’t have to do this, Joe, you really don’t," Obama reportedly told Biden. "Win or lose, they needed to make sure Mr. Biden did not ‘embarrass himself’ or ‘damage his legacy’ during the campaign," The New York Times reported at the time, citing two people with knowledge of the conversation.
Barack Obama remained coy for a long while about who he would endorse for the 2024 presidential run
Regarding who he would support in the primary, Obama stayed evasive for a considerable amount of time, declaring that he would not back anyone.
However, Obama eventually endorsed his former vice president in August 2020, after Democratic contenders like Pete Buttigieg, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Senator Bernie Sanders withdrew from the primary race, making way for Biden.
Obama said in a video at the time that "Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now," noting that choosing him as his running mate in both the 2008 and 2012 elections was "one of the best decisions I ever made."
Barack Obama's selection process for Joe Biden as his running mate had a rough beginning
Even the selection process by which Obama chose Biden to be his vice presidential candidate had some difficulties at first.
Before joining Obama as his running mate, Biden made several embarrassing mistakes, one of which occurred in 2007 just as he was ready to announce his own presidential bid.
On the eve of his announcement, Biden described Obama to a reporter as "the first mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy." Despite Biden’s comment, he and Obama soon developed and strengthened their professional relationship, culminating in Biden being selected as Obama’s VP.
Obama might keep supporting Biden's campaign during this election cycle since recent donation data indicates that Trump is catching up to Biden's campaign in terms of fundraising.
Biden previously had a massive fundraising advantage over Trump in the 2024 race for the White House, but recent windfalls following Trump’s conviction in his New York hush money criminal trial have essentially erased Biden’s lead, Fox News reported.
Joe Biden's campaign spent over $65M on ads but still got outperformed by Donald Trump
In May, Trump and the Republican National Committee outperformed Biden and the Democratic National Committee for the second consecutive month—all without purchasing any ads for the general election. On the other hand, Biden's campaign has purchased advertisements for at least $65 million.
"The campaign appreciates President Obama's help and support," a Biden campaign spokesperson told the outlet.
Internet says 'having Obama in your corner is always a great thing'
Netizens reacted to the news of Obama's appearances alongside Biden ahead of the highly anticipated debate between the latter and Trump.
One X user tweeted, "For most people Obama is a political rock star, having Obama in your corner is always a great thing."
Another added, "Well, he IS the one running for his fourth term!" possibly hinting at Obama.
"The two most biggest crooks," lashed one.
Another user commented, "Of course he is because he want's his 4th term and has been calling all the shots since 2020 anyway."
"The heat of corruption is getting close to Obama and he's getting scared," opined a user.
