Iowa Dem Rob Sand’s $250K campaign donation from Epstein-linked donor Reid Hoffman flagged by GOP
DES MOINES, IOWA: A recent press release issued by the Iowa GOP highlighted that Iowa Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand received a $250,000 campaign donation from billionaire LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman.
Department of Justice released emails have revealed Hoffman’s past interactions with convicted offender Jeffrey Epstein, drawing scrutiny from Republican critics in Iowa who are demanding answers about both the contribution and Hoffman’s controversial history.
Reid Hoffman’s Epstein-linked contributions to Rob Sand
The press release highlighted Hoffman’s donation and also cited his documented connections to Epstein in DOJ emails that reportedly outline plans for Hoffman to visit Epstein’s private island, Little St. James, along with his New York townhouse and New Mexico ranch.
One email from Epstein’s assistant described travel arrangements for a 2014 trip, noting, “Reid will take a Virgin America flight… to Fort Lauderdale,” which was part of a broader itinerary connected to a trip to the private island.
Additionally, other emails included remarks from Epstein about holding Hoffman’s passport, stating, “I have [Reid’s] passport. Found in the gift bag they had given me.” Another email referenced Hoffman in correspondence with Elon Musk regarding holiday plans in St. Barts.
Despite these documented interactions in the DOJ emails, neither Hoffman nor any other figures mentioned in the records have been charged with a crime related to Epstein. Previous admissions from Hoffman include acknowledging that he visited Epstein’s private island and stayed overnight at his New York townhouse in 2014.
In response, Hoffman has characterized these interactions as associated with fundraising efforts for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has apologized for the association, stating, “It gnaws at me that, by lending my association, I helped his reputation… I am sorry for my personal misjudgment.”
Reid Hoffman's controversial donations and GOP criticism of Rob Sand
In addition to the Sand campaign contribution, the report notes that Hoffman has financial involvement with other political and social causes. He helped fund E. Jean Carroll’s defamation lawsuit against President Donald Trump through a nonprofit organization he primarily financed.
Hoffman has also channeled money through progressive nonprofit networks, including the Good Information Foundation, an organization that attorney Preston Moore has accused of offering payments to social media influencers to produce anti-Trump content, potentially violating federal tax laws.
The report further notes that in 2024, Hoffman’s longtime political adviser Dmitri Mehlhorn emailed journalists suggesting that the assassination attempt on Trump might have been staged, describing it as a 'classic Putin play' and urging media outlets to explore the theory publicly.
Iowa Republican officials have called on Sand to address the Hoffman contribution directly. Iowa GOP spokesperson Jade Cichy asked whether Sand will return the money or if it reflects “who he really answers to,” arguing that Iowans deserve to know the candidate’s stance on accepting the donation.
The contribution from Hoffman is not Sand’s only controversial donation, according to the GOP release. It follows a $50,000 contribution Sand accepted from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, whom Republicans describe as “one of the most liberal governors in the country.”
The GOP also criticized Pritzker’s administration for policies including taxpayer-funded gender transition services for minors, sanctuary protections for immigrants, elimination of cash bail, and strict gun control measures.
