LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A collective cry of disbelief rang out across social media this week as Mattel Films announced a new animated 'Bob the Builder' movie in the works.

With 'In the Heights' star Anthony Ramos signed on to voice the construction-loving Bob and Jennifer Lopez producing, the film promises to bring the beloved children's character to the big screen with a modern twist.

But for fans of the original series, Hollywood's latest reboot felt like one too many. While creators teased celebrating Bob's journey to Puerto Rico, nostalgic fans scoffed at the need to revive a show that wasn't broken in the first place.

Mattel's 'Bob the Builder' movie follows Roberto as he travels to Puerto Rico on a major job

Mattel revealed plot details of its new take on 'Bob the Builder,' which follows Roberto (aka Bob) as he travels to Puerto Rico to take on a major construction job. According to the logline, Bob "takes on issues affecting the island and digs deeper into what it means to build" in a story celebrating Caribbean and Latin culture, as reported by Variety.

Felipe Vargas, writer of the upcoming film 'Rosario,' has been tapped to pen the screenplay. While a director is yet to be chosen, production company Nuyorican Productions, founded by Lopez, is on board to produce. Lopez and Ramos will both serve as producers.

In a statement, Ramos said the film will carry "an important message" to the big screen, with elements inspired by his own upbringing. According to Ramos, the story encompasses "friends working together, a celebration of a beautiful home they share, and how love can help to conquer any obstacle in your way."

Mattel's initial foray into theatrical releases proved triumphant with Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie'

Mattel Films President Robbie Brenner said pairing Ramos and Vargas will "capture this beloved character in a manner that audiences who grew up with Bob will recognize."

Mattel executives Kevin McKeon, Ivan Sanchez, and Arturo Thur De Koós will oversee the project based on the toy company’s beloved property.

'Bob the Builder' becomes part of a diverse lineup of upcoming Mattel films, which includes unexpected projects such as 'American Girl,' a live-action adaptation of 'Barney' featuring Daniel Kaluuya from 'Get Out,' the Vin Diesel-led 'Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots,' and Lena Dunham's interpretation of 'Polly Pocket.'

Mattel's initial foray into theatrical releases proved triumphant with Greta Gerwig's highly successful 'Barbie,' distributed by Warner Bros Pictures, grossing an impressive $1.4 billion worldwide and earning about eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
