WASHINGTON, DC: Former First Lady Michelle Obama said she was "terrified" of the upcoming presidential election and its potential outcome, as reported by CNN.

In an interview with Jay Shetty on his podcast 'On Purpose,' Obama admitted that her fear keeps her up at night.

"What's going to happen in this next election? I'm terrified about what could possibly happen, because our leaders matter," she said.

"Who we elect, who speaks for us, who holds that bully pulpit, it affects us in ways sometimes I think people take for granted."

The former First Lady's comments came as President Joe Biden kick-started his re-election bid with his first campaign speech in Pennsylvania on January 5, where he slammed his likely opposing candidate Donald Trump.

Accusing the former President of instigating the January 6 Capitol insurrection, the incumbent called him out for his anti-immigrant rhetoric that echoed German dictator Adolf Hitler.

Michelle Obama upholds the significance of government and democracy

Talking to Shetty, Obama shared her concerns about people needing to recognize the importance of the government.

“The fact that people think that government — ‘eh, does it really even do anything?’ — and I’m like ‘Oh my God, does government do everything for us, and we cannot take this democracy for granted.’ And I worry sometimes that we do. Those are the things that keep me up,” she said.

The former First Lady also expressed her concerns about various issues that keep her awake at night, such as questioning, "Are people going to vote, and why aren't people voting?"

"Those are the things that keep me up because you don't have control over them. And you wonder: 'Where are we in this? Where are our hearts?'" she added.

Obama also took a dig at the Republican frontrunner's legal battles and indictments, pointing out the double standard and what would happen if a Black man was in Trump's place.

"Other people can be indicted a bunch of times and still run for office. Black men can't. You just learn to be good. And in the end, you benefit from that extra resilience," she added without naming the former President.

In a likely Biden-Trump rematch in the upcoming election, most opinion polls shared by the website FiveThirtyEight show the incumbent is trailing behind his predecessor by a slight margin.

Biden's campaign's primary political weapon is Trump's alleged involvement in his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. However, some criticized the Democrat campaign theme of describing the real estate mogul as a "threat to democracy," which might not be reflected in the election as expected.
