CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE: New Hampshire Governor, Chris Sununu, has expressed his support for former President Donald Trump's presidential bid this week, aligning himself with the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

This decision comes after the former two-term South Carolina governor, Nikki Haley, suspended her presidential campaign, previously earning the sought-after endorsement of the New Hampshire governor ahead of the state's primary election, per CNN.

On Thursday, Governor Sununu shared with WMUR, “I’m going to support the ticket. I’m going to support Donald Trump.”

“But my focus is definitely going to be here in the state,” he added.

What did Chris Sununu say about supporting Donald Trump for the 2024 ticket?

The GOP governor of the Granite State, who has announced leaving office after his term ends this year, affirmed his stance on his criticism of the former President's electability and age.

Gov. Sununu maintained that he had no regrets about his prior remarks, however, he emphasized his continued preference for Donald Trump over current President Joe Biden.

He explained, “I mean, the alternative is Biden, and I think folks are seeing a lack of management, a lack of understanding of what’s happening with immigration, a lack of fiscal responsibility.”

Governor Sununu's support for former President Trump was preceded by months of campaigning and his vocal backing of Republican presidential candidate, Nikki Haley.

Throughout Haley’s campaign, Sununu repeatedly praised the strength of Haley's candidacy until her eventual departure on Wednesday, March 6, after Trump decisively won over a dozen states in the Super Tuesday primaries.

In addition, the New Hampshire governor countered Trump's legal arguments by describing his claims of immunity from prosecution as "crazy."

“Just because you’re a politician does not put you above the law, period,” Sununu remarked at the time.

He elaborated on how Trump ought to be held responsible, “That’s why you have attorney generals and Congress. You have a process for that.”

It has been made apparent in recent months that Sununu, a longtime opponent of Trump who once referred to the former president as "f****** crazy," always intended to back the Republican presidential nominee.

In January, CNN's Kaitlan Collins asked the New Hampshire governor if he would support Donald Trump even if he was a convicted felon, to which Sununu responded, “I will support the Republican nominee, absolutely.”

“This shouldn’t shock anybody. There shouldn’t be a surprise that the Republican governor, and most of America, will end up going against Biden, because they need to see a change in this country,” he asserted at the time.

Governor Sununu was once counted among the potential GOP contenders for the 2024 presidential election.

However, in June, he announced his decision not to seek the GOP presidential nomination.

Sununu cited the 77-year-old MAGA strongman and the emerging field of Republican candidates among the reasons for his decision to not run for the White House.

He stated at the time that the Republican Party was "clearly moving on" from Donald Trump and expressed his belief that the former president could not win a general election.

“The math has shown Donald Trump has no chance of winning in November of ’24. He wouldn’t even win Georgia. If you’re a Republican that can’t win Georgia of November ‘24, you have no shot, and he’s proven that,” Sununu said last summer in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash.

The incumbent Governor of the Granite State is currently serving his fourth two-year term and has decided not to seek reelection this year, providing an opportunity for the Democratic Party to gain a foothold in the region.

Internet slams Governor Chris Sununu for backing Donald Trump

People on X shredded the Granite State governor for coming out and endorsing Donald Trump for President despite criticizing him in the past.

One X user remarked, "He’s complicit trash. History will remember."

"Shameful. Disgraceful. And yet totally predictable," another user wrote.

Another user said, "Chris Sununu's selfish ambition knows no bounds, as he shamelessly prioritizes party over country. Endorsing a r**ist and a traitor, all in the pursuit of a cabinet seat."

One user quipped, "The guy is a wannabe dictator. Meh who cares, let’s vote for him anyway."

Another X user remarked, "Well, looks like he's choosing party over country. Politics, right?"

A user tweeted, "He always said he would vote for the party candidate."
