Details from Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office
The documents released by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday, December 23, provide a clear timeline of the events that took place on Sunday, December 14.
According to the certificates, the cause of death for both Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, was 'multiple sharp force injuries' caused 'with a knife, by another' at their residence in Brentwood.
The records specify the interval between the onset of the injuries and the time of death, listing that the duration lasted only 'minutes.'
Death certificates detail discovery and final resting place
The document further details the discovery of the couple, noting that Rob was found first at approximately 3:45 PM, followed by Michele just one minute later at 3:46 PM.
Because of this slight discrepancy in the timing of their discovery, Michele is officially listed as 'widowed' on her certificate.
Following the investigation, the Reiners were cremated at Mount Sinai Mortuary on December 19, and their remains were handed over to their eldest son, Jake.
Nick Reiner detained while other two siblings share statement
Nick Reiner, who was reportedly being treated for schizophrenia before the incident, is currently being held without bail and appeared briefly in court on December 17, though he has not yet entered a formal plea.
In a statement shared on December 17, Jake and Romy Reiner expressed the depth of their grief, stating, "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."
Reiner children ask for privacy while honoring parents' lives
Rob and Michele’s relationship began on the set of the classic film ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and led to a marriage that lasted over three decades. While the public continues to process the news, their children have asked for space to grieve.
"We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life," the siblings added.
"We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."
