NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In a bizarre twist that blurs the lines between politics and pop culture, former congressman George Santos has taken aim at Taylor Swift, insinuating that if the pop superstar were to endorse President Biden's reelection bid, it would be a case of poor judgment — a recurring theme in her songwriting, per The Hill.

Santos' comments have ignited a firestorm of reactions, ranging from amusement to outrage. The embattled former lawmaker's jab at Swift's potential political leanings not only reignites the controversy surrounding his own checkered past but also raises questions about the role of celebrity endorsements in shaping the nation's political discourse.

"I see @taylorswift13 endorsing @JoeBiden for president," Santos wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "I mean I see how this makes sense since 95% of her songs are about choosing the wrong guy. I guess we can all expect a Taylor Swift revenge song on Biden in 2025…"

While Swift has not officially announced her endorsement for the 2024 presidential election, she did vocally support Biden's 2020 campaign.

However, Santos' critique of her potential political leanings seems to stem from a recent conspiracy theory circulating on the right, which alleged that the NFL rigged games in favor of the Kansas City Chiefs, the team of Swift's boyfriend Travis Kelce, to facilitate the couple's attendance at the Super Bowl as a prelude to a Biden endorsement.

Taylor Swift and political activism

Despite Santos' dismissive tone, Swift's influence on her fans' political engagement cannot be understated. In early March, the 'Anti-Hero' singer encouraged her massive following to exercise their right to vote on Super Tuesday, posting on her Instagram story: "I wanted to remind you guys to vote the people who most represent YOU into power."

Swift then provided practical voting information, instructing her fans to "check their polling places and times" and linking to the nonpartisan voting platform Vote.org, which she has promoted once before as well.

This is not the first time Swift has leveraged her platform to encourage civic participation. During the 2018 midterm elections, she broke her long-standing political silence, endorsing two Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee.

Her endorsement was credited with driving a significant surge in voter registrations, particularly among younger demographics.

George Santos' remarks about Taylor Swift spark firestorm across social media

As expected, Santos' remarks about Swift have sparked a firestorm of reactions across social media, with users weighing in on both sides of the debate. One X user enthusiastically exclaimed, "Santos for the win!!" Meanwhile, another user concurred, stating simply, "Yes he is right." A user remarked, "We didn't deserve him."

However, dissenting voices emerged amidst the online discourse. A user took a more critical stance, commenting, "Says the dude who is about to spend decades in prison." Criticism continued as one user questioned, "Who cares what George Santos has to say?" and another dismissed Santos entirely, asserting, "He doesn’t matter anymore."
